what is acne?
Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Acne is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. Acne is characterized by areas of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and greasy skin, and may result in scarring.
The causes of acne vary, but it is thought that genetics is the underlying cause in 80% of the cases. Acne is most common among teenagers, affecting with up to 80 percent of the teenage population. Acne affects primarily skin with a greater number of oil glands, including the face, upper part of the chest, and back. During puberty, in both sexes, acne is often brought on by an increase in androgens such as testosterone.
If over the counter medications do not clear up your acne, then seeing a dermatologist would be the next logical step. Your ClearlyDerm provider can treat your acne with topical medications, oral medications, and other therapies.
Topical Medications work best when applied to clean dried skin. The most common types of topical medications include retinoids and antibiotics. Retinoids come as creams, gels and lotions. They are derived from Vitamin A and include Retin-A, Differin and Tazorac. Antibiotics work by killing excessive skin bacteria and reducing redness. Many times, topical antibiotics are used at the same time along with retinoids, applying one in the morning and the other at night.
Oral Medications include antibiotics. Choices for treating acne can include a tetracycline such as minocycline or doxycycline. Some times there are side effects such as an upset stomach or dizziness. Combined oral contraceptives are useful in treating acne in women and adolescent girls. The Food and Drug Administration approved three products that combine estrogen and progestin (Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Estrostep and Yaz).
Other therapies that are used to treat acne include light therapy, chemical peels, extraction of whiteheads and blackheads, and steroid injections. ClearlyDerm uses the Isolaz system, which combines a broadband light with pore cleaning. Chemical peels can be effective in treating acne by causing the top layer of skin to be removed. This procedure can be used multiple times. ClearlyDerm uses the Dermasweep extraction system. Dermasweep can very effectively remove blackheads and whiteheads using various liquids during the procedure. Our aestheticians perform the Dermasweep procedure. Certain types of nodular and cystic lesions can be treated with steroid injections. This improves the appearance with the need for extraction.
